The Head Coach for the Wolfpack women's basketball program from 1975-2009, Coach Kay Yow bled Red & White. Coach Yow had more than 700 career wins and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. She also coached the U.S. women's basketball team to an Olympic gold medal in 1988 despite having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. In April 2010, CollegeInsider.com created a new award called the Kay Yow National Coach of the Year Award in her honor. It will be presented annually to the women's college basketball head coach who displays great personal character on and off the court. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was established in 2007 during Coach Yow's public battle with Breast Cancer and has raised over $1,300,000 for scientific research.

Created in honor of Coach Kay Yow, the Kay Yow Endowment raises money toward scholarships for female athletes at NC State. Yow, who died of cancer in 2009, continues to inspire students at NC State.
